10 Benefits of Baby Slings
written by Sally Akins

Babywearing is great for bonding with your baby in the early days – newborn babies have poor vision but an excellent sense of smell. By holding your baby near you, he’ll be able to smell your scent and will feel comforted by your closeness. And babywearing is great for helping your baby to bond with Dad as well.

Premature babies benefit greatly from being held and studies have shown that ‘kangaroo care’ is an important factor in reducing mortality rates in premature babies. Close contact helps them to regulate their body temperature, breathing and heart beat and makes them feel more secure.

Being held in an upright position eases discomfort, if your baby suffers from reflux, colic or wind after feeding, makes it easier for the gas to pass through their body, and reduces possetting.

Using a sling can make getting out and about easier. If you have one baby, then it means you can do away with the pushchair, and if you have an older toddler as well then it can be much easier to use a sling for your baby and a light buggy for your toddler.

It makes life more interesting for your baby, you’ll be seeing the same sights and will naturally talk to your baby about what you’re both seeing, and he will respond to you and ‘talk’ back. If your baby is startled by something, he’ll be comforted by your closeness and more ready to accept new faces and places.

It’s great for breastfeeding mums - if your baby likes to have long feeds, babywearing prevents you having to spend long periods of time stuck on the sofa. Certain slings are great for discreet breastfeeding, which is great if you feel self-conscious about feeding in front of other people or when out and about

Babies who are carried tend to cry less, which is great news for everyone. A grizzly baby will be comforted, and an overtired baby will be soothed off to a much needed sleep by the sound of your heartbeat, warmth of your body and rhythmic movements as you move around.

You’ll be able to do more - by wearing your baby you’ll easily be able to do jobs around the house, pop out to the shops or visiting friends, take your toddler to toddler group or prepare dinner.

It’s better for your back, as a baby sling distributes the weight of your baby more evenly across your whole back. Many parents find that using a sling means they can carry their baby for longer, often until the child is at least 2 years old (or until they start to protest about being carried!).

Babywearing makes your daily life much easier. You can get on with all the tasks you need to do, play with older children, and still keep your baby close to you. You’ll feel more confident and less tied down, while your baby feels comfortable, secure and is learning from you as you experience life together.
