We arrived at hospital around 11.15am on Friday 15th August and headed to the
labour wards to get settled in. When we arrived we were seen by the midwives and
talked through the process of the day. There were three electives planned for
that day and I was third on the list so not due to go to theatre till around
3.30pm or so.
After being kitted out with gorgeous hospital gowns and anti embolism stockings
we sat around for a few hours just waiting. That was horrible as I was so
nervous! It helped that the other girls were feeling exactly the same though. I
had millions of worries, could I love another as much as Leona, was I ruining
her life, would I cope being a Mum of two, let alone the worries of the
operation!!
At 2.30pm we were taken down to the theatre prep rooms. At this point I was
surprisingly calm to be honest! A student anaesthetist came along to insert the
canula into my hand for the saline drip – he was a bit hopeless and couldn’t
find a vein although eventually he got it done and I was wheeled through to
theatre for my spinal block whilst Chris got all sorted and dressed in his
scrubs etc.
This is where the fun started. The aforementioned student actually attempted to
do my spinal block and couldn’t. He kept hitting bone which was bloody sore and
eventually after two or three painful failed attempts the real anaesthetist took
over and got it sited first time so all systems were go.
It was very weird feeling everything go numb as I didn’t remember a whole lot of
my previous c-section. Before I knew it Chris was in the room and they had
started the section at which point I felt incredibly sick and promptly puked up
several times – I did feel better afterwards though. My fingers started getting
all tingly though and my arms and chest went numb – they had sited the spinal
too high and within minutes all I could feel was my face. I stayed very calm
apparently but it was an absolute nightmare – I kept feeling like my gown was
tight round my neck etc because my chest was so constricted when in actual fact
there was nothing even close to my neck. It is a totally bizarre feeling to only
feel from the neck up!!
At 4.01pm they announced that Logan had been born – he did have the cord round
his neck but was perfectly fine; They brought him over to Chris to hold and at
that point it didn’t really matter what else they were doing – he was so
gorgeous. It was a lovely feeling as it just felt ‘right’. Not a sudden rush of
love or anything, just like our family was complete. I was so out of it with
Leona I missed all that so am glad that I got the chance this time.
Chris held him all the while they were stitching me up till they were just about
done and the midwives took him to get Logan weighed and cleaned up, we followed
behind them shortly afterwards.
Once in recovery I started to get some feeling back in my arms etc but at that
point started being violently sick which lasted till approx 1am! Funnily enough
the other two girls were exactly the same, with everyone announcing that they
hadn’t seen girls as sick as us for years – ummmm, didn’t it strike anyone but
us as odd that all three of us were the same?!?
Eventually though I got lovely skin to skin cuddles from my baby boy although
because of being numb couldn’t do the first breast feed as I’d planned to. Once
we finally got upstairs to the wards and the sickness settled I got to spend
some quality cuddling time
All in all it was a relatively positive experience – the anaesthetic was a bit
of a nightmare but then some people react and some don’t so not really a big
deal. The main thing is that Logan arrived safely and I was well afterwards.
He’s settled into our family really well so far, Leona adores him – only
tantrums so far are when she can’t get a cuddle coz he’s asleep.
All in all I’m a very happy and contented Mummy of two!!
